Explore wire rope, synthetic, and chain slings along with their variations, strengths, and ideal applications.

  • Safe Rigging Practices
Learn the principles of hitches and angles, how to calculate working loads, and the precautions required to prevent accidents.

  • Wire Rope Applications & Inspection
Gain knowledge of wire rope use in running ropes and learn inspection procedures to identify early signs of wear or failure.

  • Fitting Inspection
Develop the ability to properly identify fittings, evaluate their applications, and determine when replacement is necessary.

  • Wire Rope Sling Inspection
Step-by-step procedures for inspecting wire rope slings to ensure safety and compliance.

Hand Signals

Rigging and slinging work must always be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, qualified workers who are familiar with both the rigging being used and the proper hand signals for controlling hoisting operations.

When hand signals are used between a signal person and a crane or hoist operator, they must follow standardized signals. Using consistent, recognized hand signals ensures clear communication and helps prevent accidents during lifting operations.

Standard Crane Hand Signals

  • Hoist (Lift) – With forearm vertical, forefinger pointing up, move hand in small horizontal circles.

  • Lower – With arm extended downward, forefinger pointing down, move hand in small horizontal circles.

  • Stop – Extend arm out to the side, palm down, and hold still.

  • Emergency Stop – Extend both arms out to the sides, palms down, and hold still.

  • Raise Boom – Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing upward.

  • Lower Boom – Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing downward.

  • Swing – Point arm outward from body, finger extended, and move arm in the direction the boom should swing.

  • Raise Boom & Lower Load – Arm extended, thumb pointing up; while flexing fingers in and out.

  • Lower Boom & Raise Load – Arm extended, thumb pointing down; while flexing fingers in and out.

  • Travel (Mobile Crane) – Arm extended forward, palm up, move hand in a circular motion. Add direction with body movement.

  • Dog Everything (Pause / Hold) – Clasp hands in front of the body.

Safety at the Core

At Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling, we know that moving people and material isn’t just about getting the job done — it’s about doing it safely, every time. Behind every lift are challenges, expectations, and risks that require skill, preparation, and awareness. That’s why safety is never an afterthought for us — it’s the foundation of everything we do.

Our team builds and provides rigging equipment and hoists that move military equipment, build highways, find energy, and secure people and cargo. But just as important as the tools themselves is the knowledge to use them properly. That’s why we offer hands-on Rigging Safety Seminars — to give your team the training, confidence, and awareness they need to work smarter and safer.

At KWRS, we believe that safety makes the difference — in protecting people, protecting equipment, and protecting the job. Our expertise is here for you, and we’re committed to sharing it.
